| Sumari: | Visions of another kind of society have often gone hand in hand with dreams about the construction of the “new man”. It is therefore unsurprising that notions of education, learning and cultivation have been important elements for the utopian tradition. Based on ten pedagogical utopias that stretch from the late 19th century to our own time, this anthology deals with the mutual and productive relationship between pedagogical and utopian ideas. The volume offers a veritable cartography of modern pedagogical-utopic models for thought.
The book presents both well-known utopias as well as utopic models that have become nothing more than historical footnotes. While most examples comprising the volume are targeted at children, the anthology also considers utopian visions oriented towards adults. Some utopias treated in the book are exclusive and elitist while others are more egalitarian in nature; some are scientific while others are religious and mystical. In the book, social utopias are juxtaposed with utopic images of the individual; political blueprints are compared with moral utopias. What all the examples covered in the volume have in common is that they express a longing for a type of education that is different to the one dominant in contemporary society. |
