Chapter 23: Genes and heritability in intergenerational transmission

In this chapter, we connect the literatures on heritability and intergenerational mobility of socioeconomic status (SES). We explain that measures of heritability and intergenerational mobility both quantify the contribution of specific factors to persisting differences between families. We provide...

Opis
Sažetak:In this chapter, we connect the literatures on heritability and intergenerational mobility of socioeconomic status (SES). We explain that measures of heritability and intergenerational mobility both quantify the contribution of specific factors to persisting differences between families. We provide an overview of theory and empirical findings concerning the contribution of genetic variation to the variance in SES outcomes. We discuss the difficulties related to separating the contribution of genetic factors from the contribution of environmental factors through the framework of gene-environment interplays. Finally, we highlight studies that account for such interplays by combining insights from the fields of behavioural genetics and intergenerational mobility.
